ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (AP) — A man has been convicted of second-degree murder after fatally shooting a man during a confrontation about a dog in southwestern Michigan.

The Herald-Palladium of St. Joseph reports a jury on Thursday found 30-year-old Roy Thompson of Benton Harbor guilty in the slaying of 53-year-old David Krieger, who was shot in the chest Dec. 11 outside a hydraulic repair and supply shop in Benton Township.

Authorities say Thompson shot Krieger after Krieger told him to stop kicking a dog and not to come on the shop’s property.

Thompson testified in his own defense during the trial, saying he nudged a dog with his foot because the dog was not in its own yard. He said the dog was “playful.”

Sentencing is scheduled for Aug. 1.
