BAGHDAD (AP) — Associated Press reporters at the scene of a massive car bombing in central Baghdad say many of the 78 people killed in the busy Karada shopping district were children.

That blast and a smaller one in eastern Baghdad killed a total of at least 83 people today. The bombings wounded 176 people.

In an online statement, Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the Karada attack, which struck a busy shopping district of the capital. The statement could not be independently verified.

The bombing hit as families and young people were out on the streets of Karada district after breaking their Ramadan fast.

The casualty figures were confirmed by police and hospital officials, who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to release information to the press.

The attacks come after Iraqi forces retook the city of Fallujah from IS.
