Pokémon Go players should be aware of possible muggings, Indiana State Police warns

Mark McGill poses with a Pokémon as part of the augmented reality mobile game Pokémon Go on Monday, July 11, 2016.

Pokémon Go players are being encouraged to be extra cautious while playing after recent reports of muggings in connection to the game.

Some people are using the beacon feature on the mobile game to lure people to a certain area and then robbing them, the Indiana State Police said.

Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game on Android and Apple mobile devices in which users must walk around in the real world to find and catch cartoon animals on their smartphones. The game was released last week in the U.S. and has quickly become one of the most-downloaded and most-used apps.

Players can put down beacons to lure Pokémon to a specific area, which encourages other Pokémon Go players to also visit that area.

The Indiana State Police also wants people to be smart about when they play the game too, not just where.
