WOODHAVEN, Mich. (AP) — Two young people are charged with animal cruelty after authorities say they killed a guinea pig before a Detroit-area high school lacrosse game.
The Wayne County prosecutor’s office announced Monday that 18-year-old Tanner Coolsaet and 17-year-old Michael Roth are each charged with killing or torturing animals. The court in the Detroit suburb of Woodhaven says records didn’t list lawyers for them.
The prosecutor’s office says they were members of the Grosse Ile High School varsity lacrosse team when they met April 30 with others on the team. They say Coolsaet slit the guinea pig’s throat with a knife and Roth struck the animal with a small bat.
Grosse Ile Township police have said it didn’t happen on school grounds. The team was kept off the field as authorities investigated.
