OAK PARK, Mich. (AP) — A traffic safety effort in Michigan is reminding motorists to move over for police and fire vehicles as well as ambulances and tow trucks.
Those involved in the effort say too many drivers are putting emergency responders at risk by failing to obey the state’s Emergency Vehicle Caution Law. State police 1st Lt. Ken Dilg, commander of the Metro North Post, says in a statement Monday it’s “an epidemic.”
The law requires motorists to move over for stationary emergency vehicles with their lights activated or slow down and pass with caution if it’s not possible to safely change lanes. State police say they remain committed to strict enforcement of the law statewide.
Violation is a misdemeanor and is subject to four points on a motorist’s license. Enhanced penalties are possible.
