The City of South Bend has opened three public cooling sites around the city this week as temperatures rise in the region.

Temperatures are expected to climb above 90 degrees with a heat index around 100 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The City will open three facilities as cooling sites from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 21 and Friday, July 22:

O’Brien Recreation Center, 321 E. Walter St.

Charles Black, Sr. Recreation Center, 3419 W. Washington St.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center, 1522 Linden Ave.

The cooling sites consist of a designated room at each facility so that residents can find relief from the heat and have access to water fountains and bathrooms. No food, bottled water, or entertainment will be provided.

In Elkhart, residents seeking relief from the heat can do so at the Elkhart Central Fire Station in downtown Elkhart. It will be open to the public 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. through Saturday.
