Fiery toll road crash snarls traffic Thursday morning

(Emily Kinzer/ABC 57)

It was a slow go heading westbound on the Toll Road Thursday, thanks to a semi crash making a mess of things.

It happened just west of the St. Joseph-LaPorte County line at mile marker 61 at around 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

The FedEx semi hit a guardrail and then flipped over. Finally, to make matters worse, the crash caused a diesel fuel leak that set the truck on fire, according to ABC 57.

The driver told police he had looked down to get something out of his lunch box. That’s when he looked up and the guard rail was right in front of him.

Westbound traffic was down to one lane for most of the morning while the lengthy clean-up process was underway. The truck was carrying freight, which ended up scattered on the roadway.

The driver suffered a minor leg injury due to kicking out the windshield to escape the cab.
