LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Criminal justice agencies across Michigan are getting more than $6 million in federal grants to strengthen crime fighting and anti-drug efforts.

The funding announced Friday by Gov. Rick Snyder comes from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (Byrne JAG) Program and the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for State Prisoners (RSAT) Program.

In a statement, Snyder says the money “will help build stronger communities through increased prevention, enforcement and treatment efforts.”

Byrne JAG funds support all aspects of the criminal justice system, and this year’s awards focus on multijurisdictional drug task forces, priority population drug courts, juvenile-focused community policing, indigent defense, prosecutorial efforts and justice information sharing.

The other funds support the development and implementation of residential substance abuse treatment programs in correctional facilities.
