It’s 44 years in prison for a South Bend man accused of kidnapping a man for ransom in 2015.

32-year-old Lindani Mzembe was sentenced in federal court after being found guilty in August to kidnapping, making a ransom demand, discharging a firearm during a crime of violence and being felon in possession of a firearm. He was also given a year of supervised release.

Mzembe and his co-defendants, Derek Fields and Ivan Brazier, grabbed a 39-year-old man on South Illinois St., hit him with a handgun, accidentally shot him in the elbow, bound him, and started demanding money. The man’s family reported the incident and he was then released seven hours later, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Fields and Brazier have already been convicted, with Fields facing sentencing on Feb. 22.
