Mishawaka man sentenced to 71 years after beating death of neighbor

A Mishawaka man has been sentenced to 71 years in prison for beating his elderly neighbor to death after she complained of loud music.

43-year-old Donald L. Wilson was sentenced to 65 years in prison for murder, plus an additional 6 years to be served consecutively for unlawfully possessing a firearm by a serious violent felon, according to ABC 57.

Authorities claim 67-year-old Joann Newgent had asked Wilson, who was her neighbor, to turn down his music and he turned violent, striking her with the leg of a coffee table. Wilson was arrested after a standoff with police.

Wilson’s defense attorney suggested another male neighbor could have committed the crime.
