Local high school students take part in simulated drunk driving crash, rescue

Some local high school students will get an up close lesson on the dangers of drinking and driving, as the South Bend Fire Department and South Bend Police take part in a Prom Night Underage Drinking and Distracted Driving exercise.

The exercise took place on Tuesday morning, April 18, at the South Bend Police Department and Saint Joseph County Jail.

During the drill, firefighters will extricate eight patients as police officers from the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team investigate the crash scene.

A MedFlight helicopter arrived on the scene to “transport” one of the make believe patients after another patient is loaded into the ambulance.

Students from Riley High School and Washington High School documented the fake crash and rescue scene in an effort to produce a public service announcement about the dangers of drinking and driving during prom season.
