A three-vehicle crash south of Elkhart resulted in the death of an Elkhart woman who attempted to pass another vehicle.

The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department responded to the collision on State Road 19 north of County Road 28 shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Officers say 27-year-old Erika Guadalupe Robles Arriaga improperly passed a vehicle, then hit an oncoming vehicle head-on. Debris from that crash struck a third northbound vehicle.

Arriaga was pronounced dead at the scene. A 44-year-old Elkhart man in the second vehicle was taken to Elkhart General Hospital after complaining of pain in both legs.

State Road 19 was closed for much of the morning during the cleanup and investigation of the crash.
