Menards plans for new Erskine Commons store finally moving forward

It appears that South Bend residents will finally be saving big money at a new Menards store in the Erskine Commons area.

Over eight years ago, company officials at Menards initially announced plans to build a new store southeast of the Ireland Road and Michigan Street intersection, according to the South Bend Tribune.

The home improvement chain is asking the South Bend Common Council that a 5.4 acre site comprising of a long-shuttered big box store and other residential and business properties be rezoned to “community business.”

The vacant big box store used to be a Sears Essentials…this after it was initially a KMart. It’s been vacant since May 2009.

It’s unclear whether this store will replace its Erskine Plaza store about a mile east on Ireland Road.
