Elkhart County dealing with growing number of heroin overdose deaths

Elkhart County is struggling with heroin dealing and usage.

County Prosecutor Vicki Becker says there have been 30 arrests in the county this year that involved carrying heroin.

She says meth was a huge problem in Elkhart County before the recession hit in 2007, and ten years later the drug problem is still big, but has taken a backseat to heroin. Of the 19 overdose deaths this year in the county, eight were from heroin use.

Her goal is to go beyond prosecution and move to intervention, and has partnered with the Drug Free Partnership and Gweedo’s Purple Shamrocks to find options for treatment.
