Fatal crash in LaPorte indirectly leads to second crash later

A fatal crash in LaPorte indirectly led to another crash afterwards Monday night.

LaPorte police say a semi hit a bicyclist that crossed into the semi’s path at about 6:40 p.m. central time Monday at the intersection of “J” and 6th Streets.

The bicyclist reportedly disregarded a red light before he was hit. He was pronounced dead at LaPorte Hospital. He’s not been publicly identified yet.

A little over three hours later, a LaPorte officer went to inform INDOT that the intersection was clear when he encountered an object in the middle of State Road 2 nearby and hit a utility pole.

The officer was treated for a head and arm injury and was last listed in stable condition at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
