It’s 65 years in prison for the man who beat a gay military veteran to death in South Bend.
23-year-old Jabreeh Davis-Martin was found guilty of murder in June. The South Bend Tribune reports that he was given the maximum term he could have received for killing Jodie Henderson in January of 2016 and will be required to serve at least 48 years in prison after time-served is factored in.
Authorities said Davis-Martin attacked the South Bend veteran with a bar stool after being told by a third party that Henderson had romantic feelings for Davis-Martin, who the South Bend Tribune reports was also gay.
Davis-Martin attacked Henderson with a folding bar stool and broken parts of porch railing, and he left Henderson’s body on the street to be discovered the next morning.
At that time, Indiana State Sen. Susan Glick (R-LaGrange County) proposed a hate crime bill during the Indiana 2016 legislative session, but it didn’t pass committee. This week, in light of the Charlottesville protests over the weekend, Glick announced she’s looking into possibly making another push for a hate crimes bill.
