Notre Dame wants to study your family in order to solve how to help kids with developmental disabilities.

For the doctor behind the project, it hits home for him.

Logan Center Dr. Joshua John Diehl grew up with a brother that had a developmental disability. He told ABC 57 that there was a lot that he wish he knew when he was growing up.

“I think a lot of times I didn’t want to be a burden on my family with my own feelings or concerns about my brother,” Diehl said. “And I wish I could have communicated that more.”

Notre Dame is receiving a $3.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for the study. Participating families must have co-habitating parents, a child with a developmental or intellectual disability, and a child that’s developing normally.

Families will learn how to communicate with one another as well as solve problems together during the study.
