It’s a 70 year prison sentence for a man who tried to kill a Mishawaka woman back in 2015.

The victim was in her home in the 500 block of Grand Boulevard when she smelled smoke coming from her basement.

Went she went downstairs, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor says Stephen Byrd, 32, attacked her with a knife. The woman suffered injuries to her arms, neck, face and head.

On Friday, Sept. 8, Byrd was sentenced to 35 years in prison for attempted murder and 35 years in prison for burglary with serious bodily injury.

The sentences will run consecutively.

This sentence is also consecutive to Byrd’s three-year sentence for battery with a deadly
weapon that was committed prior to the stabbing. The  Byrd was released on
bond at the time of the stabbing, according to the prosecutor’s office.
