Dump truck hits bridge, then gets hit by semi on bypass in South Bend

A crash involving a pair of large trucks Wednesday morning shut down the eastbound bypass during the morning commute.

INDOT officials say traffic was diverted at the State Road 23 exit after a hydraulic malfunction caused the bed of a dump truck to hit the bridge there. The truck was then struck by a semi. Both sides of the bypass had to be shut down for a time to clear the scene.

INDOT bridge specialists were called in to inspect the bridge and assess the damage. There’s some concern that concrete could fall and hit travelers, which is why traffic is being diverted.

Both drivers suffered minor injuries.
