A Benton Harbor man has been officially charged in the shooting death of his longtime lover and mother of his children.

37-year-old William Dawun Edwards was arraigned Monday on Open Murder, Felon in Possession of a Firearm and two Felony Firearm charges following the shooting death of 38-year-old Novena Mathis earlier this month. The body of Mathis was found in a vehicle on January 7th, one day after Edwards allegedly shot her then fled to Kalamazoo.

The Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office says he had a confrontation with his mother, which led to police being called on him. The murder weapon is believed to have been recovered in Kalamazoo, and he’s facing a criminal firearm charge for that along with a drug dealing charge in Kalamazoo.

He’s facing life in prison if convicted.
