A teenage girl has died after she was struck by a South Shore train on Saturday.

It happened at about 12:30 p.m. in the area of East Bell Avenue and North Cottage Grove Avenue in Hudson Lake.

LaPorte County deputies say they found the 17-year-old girl underneath the fifth train car. She was flown to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where she died later that night.

Officers have not identified the girl publicly yet, but noted she lived in the area.

The train was heading westbound at the time with 122 passengers. No one else was hurt. Train service was delayed as officers investigated.
