A woman has been charged a month and a half after she allegedly ran over and killed a 7-year-old boy in Mishawaka.

On June 1st, 7-year-old Briyson Councell was run over by a car on 6th Street. The child was playing with his sister in the backyard behind the duplex he lives when he was hit by an SUV.

Court documents say he was in critical condition when first responders arrived, but he died at a local hospital due to blunt force injuries to his head.

The woman who allegedly hit the child, 22-year-old Kayla Bennett, lives next door. Results from a blood test that came back this week reportedly revealed marijuana in her system at the time of the incident.

She’s charged with a single count of Causing Death When Operating a Motor Vehicle with a
Schedule I or II Controlled Substance in the Blood, and faces up to 12 years in prison.
