Boy, 7, dead after being struck and killed by vehicle in Mishawaka

A seven-year-old boy who was struck by an SUV in his yard on Friday, June 1, has died.

The child was hit by the vehicle while playing in his backyard in the 800 block of W. 6th Street in Mishawaka just after 5:30 p.m., according to 95.3 MNC’s reporting partners at ABC 57.

A 22-year-old woman who lives in the same duplex pulled into the backyard to park, but did not see the boy, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office.

The child was taken to the Memorial Hospital in South Bend where he was pronounced dead.

The victim, who was with an older sibling at the time he was struck, was the only person who was injured.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office released the following information late Friday night:

St. Joseph County-At approximately 5:36 p.m. on June 1, 2018, Mishawaka Police Department officers were dispatched to the 800 block of 6th St. for a crash. A 22 year old was driving a Lincoln Navigator east down the alley in between 6th and 7th. She turned north into the backyard of the duplex to park, and as she did so, she struck and ran over a 7 year old.

The 7 year old was taken to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was activated, per protocol, to handle the investigation. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
