A large fight at a Dowagiac bar lead to shots fired and a man dead.

Dowagiac police say they were called to the Beeson Street Bar at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Officers discovered a chaotic scene and a large crowd before discovering a man who had died from a gunshot wound.

The suspect in the shooting had taken off northbound from the parking lot behind the bar. Officers started searching and eventually found the suspect on West Telegraph Street.

Officers later learned the suspect went to his vehicle to grab an AK-47 style of rifle from his vehicle after the bar fight started. As he was heading northbound away from the parking lot, police say he was able to get his rifle loaded and fired back on the group, missing his target, but hitting another man in the group and killing him.

The weapon has since been recovered. The man who died was a 42-year-old man from Dowagiac. The suspect is a 24-year-old Dowagiac man and is in Cass County Jail on an initial charge of open murder.
