A police chase that started in Niles ended with a fatal crash near Buchanan.

At about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Berrien County officers found a vehicle that matched a report of a drunk driver in the area. When officers attempted to pull over the driver, he took off at a high rate of speed in his Subaru.

The chase continued out of Niles on westbound Niles-Buchanan Road. The pursuit reached 100 miles per hour at times and officers say the driver drove erratically several times.

The driver eventually lost control on Niles-Buchanan Road west of Mayflower Road and crashed into a tree on the northside of the road near Orchard Hills Country Club.

24-year-old David Lee Bross Jr. was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. An autopsy will be performed Monday.
