Police: Elkhart man leads officers on high speed chase on U.S. 20 bypass and U.S. 33

A police chase on the US 20 Bypass involved speeds over 100 miler per hour.

An Indiana State Trooper clocked a the driver of a Mercedes at 108 miles per hour heading eastbound near mile marker 91 around 9:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 15, according to Indiana State Police.

The trooper caught up with the vehicle as it exited onto southbound US 33, state police reported.

As the Mercedes turned west onto Shaffer Avenue, the trooper turned on his emergency lights and siren and the driver of the Mercedes turned off its lights and sped away, travelling south on CR 111, state police reported.

The Mercedes continued east on CR 20 before entering a subdivision.

After entering the subdivision, the Mercedes drove through two yards before finally stopping on Merrimac Lane just south of Belmar Drive.

The driver, identified as Veniamin Rumatchik, 18, of Elkhart, was arrested on preliminary charges of Resisting Law Enforcement and Reckless Driving.

He was taken to the Elkhart County Jail.
