A 68-year-old man died in a fire in Goshen.

The blaze broke out around 12:50 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, at a home in the 400 block of North 1st Street.

Firefighters were able to get into the home immediately when they arrived on scene and found the victim, Charles E. Grise, dead inside, according to the Goshen Police Department.

Grise was unable to get out of the home and died due to the smoke and fire.
Goshen Police and Fire Chaplains were called to the scene to provide assistance to Grise’s family, the police department reported.

The source of the fire appears to have been accidental, but as is procedure in every death-related incident, the Elkhart County Homicide Unit was called to oversee the investigation.
