The South Bend Fire Department will deploy several fire companies in the Harter Heights Neighborhood from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 8, to install smoke alarms in homes.

Fire Chief Stephen Cox said, “Every home in the city should have working smoke alarms, alarms should be installed on every level of the home.” South Bend Firefighters will install up to three smoke alarms in each house and offer education to the homeowner concerning cooking, smoking, space heaters, and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Installing an alarm is just the beginning says Captain Gerard Ellis, “Education is a key component to our program. Adults and children need to know what to do when the alarm “sounds” and what to do if smoke or flames block your exit. A working alarm, practicing an escape plan and sleeping with your bedroom door closed can help save lives or reduce injury during a fire!”

The smoke alarms and installations are free to all residents in South Bend, but this canvass will cover the Harter Heights area on Stanfield and surrounding streets.

Residents are encouraged to call the South Bend Fire Department at 235-9255 for further information.
