Man, 33, arrested on meth, other charges, connected to deadly crash on Bremen Highway

A 33-year-old man who police say caused a crash on Bremen Highway that claimed the life of a 60-year-old woman has been placed under arrest.

Alan Tarchala was behind the wheel of a Jeep, back in January, when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle, entered the oncoming lane of traffic and hit another vehicle, killing Sherry Amiel, 60.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office released the following information about the arrest:

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged Alan Tarchala, 33, in connection with the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team investigation of a January 26, crash that resulted in the death of Sherry Amiel, 60. The crash occurred in the area of Bremen Hwy and Petro Drive. He is charged with:

Count I: Causing Death When Operating a Motor a Level 5 Felony Vehicle With a Sched. I or II Controlled Substance in the Blood

Count II: Causing Serious Bodily Injury When a Level 6 Felony Operating a Vehicle with a Sched. I or II Substance in Body

Count III: Possession of Methamphetamine a Level 6 Felony

Count IV: Causing Death When Operating a a Level 4 Felony Motor Vehicle with a Sched. I or II Controlled Substance in the Blood

Probable cause was found and an arrest warrant was ordered issued. Tarchala was
ordered held for next available bail hearing after the warrant is served. Tarchala was
arrested on Thursday, May 2,  on this warrant in Portage and was booked into the Porter
County Jail.
