A 25-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after nearly drowning in Lake Michigan.

The Department of Natural Resources said the man was swimming with family near Washington Park Beach when waves overcame him and he didn’t resurface, according to WNDU.

He was rescued by first responders and good samaritans.

When the incident happened, it was “red flag” swimming conditions, meaning no one was allowed to be in the lake.
