Race car driver suffers heart attack at South Bend Speedway

A race car driver competing at South Bend Motor Speedway on Saturday is being treated after pulling off the track and suffering a heart attack.

Ron Ingle was having engine trouble and pulled his car onto the infield. WNDU reports that shortly after he got out of his car, he suffered a heart attack and collapsed. Safety officials administered CPR until medics arrived, and the race was cancelled.

The family says Ingle was on a breathing tube until Tuesday, and he was scheduled for open-heart surgery Thursday morning to treat what was called “serious blockage.”

There will be a fundraiser at South Bend Motor Speedway on Saturday to help raise funds for his medical expenses.
