Michigan Department of State develops new tool for digital voter registration

A new tool has been developed to allow Michigan voter registration drives to register voters digitally.

The Michigan Department of State developed the tool, which registers voters through the state’s online registration website. Groups can now connect to the online voter registration system through an application programming interface, or API.

Voter registration drives are typically paper-based, but many groups are increasingly making use of digital options.

Organizations interested in using the API to register voters can do so after completing a security review and working to ensure compatibility with the state’s platform. Email the Bureau of Elections (elections@michigan.gov) to learn more.

Voters should keep in mind, API or paper registration aside, they’ll still be required to provide all necessary information to register, including a driver’s license number and the last four digits of their social security number.
