79 animals discovered in Dowagiac home during hoarding investigation

An investigation is underway after 79 animals were discovered in a Dowagiac home.

Police executed a search warrant at the home in the 100 block of Lester Street in reference to an animal abuse and hoarding investigation.

During the search Thursday morning, police located several animals in cages both inside and outside of the home, including the following:

  • 48 Rabbits
  • 10 Dogs
  • 8 Cats
  • 5 Quails
  • 4 Guinea Pigs
  • 2 Love Birds
  • 1 Turtle
  • 1 Chicken

Police report all of the animals were seized and taken to animal control. All appeared to be fed and in good condition.

The homeowner, a 37-year-old Dowagiac man, has been contacted by police. So far, no charges have been announced.
