As many as 5,600 Hoosiers are homeless, a three-percent increase over last year.
The annual January count of the homeless covered just over half Indiana’s counties, including all the urban areas.
Homelessness was down or basically flat in most of the state. But South Bend, northwest Indiana, and the counties across the river from Louisville saw an increase of nearly 300 homeless, more than offsetting declines in the rest of the state.
The annual count is conducted in January, so any disruptions due to the pandemic aren’t included.

What is the reason for the increase in northern Indiana and southern Indiana that would be enough to offset the decrease throughout the rest of the state?
