The City of South Bend has begun flow testing more than 950 fire hydrants.

Flow testing ensures adequate water supply and pressure is delivered to the hydrants when they are needed in a fire emergency. This also helps improve the City’s Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating, which evaluates the community’s ability to handle fires.

Currently, South Bend is at a 2, with 1 being the highest rating. A 1 classification could help reduce homeowner insurance premiums.

During testing, residents may notice a temporary drop in water pressure and may experience discolored water. These residents should run cold-water faucets at full stream until water runs clear again.

Hydrant flow testing is expected to run through the end of November.
