Scammers using fake letters in Michigan taxpayer scam

Michigan taxpayers are being warned of a new scam that’s making the rounds through the U.S. Postal Service.

The Michigan Department of Treasury reports the scam specifically targets taxpayers with past-due tax debts.

In the scheme, taxpayers receive a letter about an overdue bill that asks the victim to call a toll-free number to resolve the issue. The letter threatens to seize a taxpayer’s property – including bank accounts, wages, business assets, cars, real estate and cash – if the debt isn’t settled.

The Treasury is reminding taxpayers that it only corresponds through official letters that use State of Michigan letterhead that embody both the names of the governor and state treasurer.

If you think you’ve received a letter from a scammer, or have any questions about state debts, call the Treasury’s Collections Service Center at (517) 636-5265. To learn more, visit michigan.gov/taxes.
