Police in Michigan City got more than they bargained for when they stopped a vehicle for a driver using high beam headlights despite oncoming traffic…

The traffic stop happened around 11:50 p.m. on Thursday, March 18, in the 200 block of South Porter Street.

The officers pulled over the vehicle and a police K-9 alerted the officers to the odor of narcotics.

That led to a search of the vehicle that turned up drug paraphernalia and a handgun where 18-year-old Br’yon Mitchell, 18, of Michigan City, was sitting as a passenger, stated the report.

Officials report that Mitchell was arrested on the preliminary charges of felon in possession of a firearm and obliterating identifying marks on a handgun.

Mitchell was taken to the LaPorte County Jail and is due in court on Tuesday.

The driver was released after the traffic stop.
