Six-month-old baby killed, second child injured in crash on U.S. 31

A 6-month-old baby died after a semi smashed into the back of the vehicle they were riding in on U.S. 31 in Miami County.

The collision happened around 4 p.m. on Monday, May 10, when state police say a Toyota, driven by a 32-year-old woman from South Bend was stopping for a light at Miami County Road 100 North and a 35-year-old Rochester man driving a semi failed to stop and rear-ended the Toyota.

Six-month-old Leo Wallace, who was in the backseat of the Toyota died. A 2-year-old girl who was also in the backseat was taken to Riley’s Hospital for Children with life-threatening injuries.

The South Bend woman driving the car was airlifted to a hospital in Fort Wayne with serious injuries.

Police say both children were properly secured with safety seats, but the crash impact was too severe to prevent their injuries.

After the investigation concludes, a report will be forwarded to the Miami County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
