New task force in Michigan studying juvenile justice system

Earlier this week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the creation of a new task force that seeks to improve Michigan’s juvenile justice system.

Whitmer’s office says the task force will collect data to better understand how the state and counties treat juveniles who break the law, and how to reduce the number of young adults in the system and prevent them from entering it at all.

Michigan is still detaining young people at one of the highest rates in the country.

The Task Force on Juvenile Justice Reform will present their findings and recommendations for legislation, funding and policy changes by July of next year.
