One person killed in toll road crash near Portage

One person is dead following a Sunday afternoon crash on the Indiana Toll Road near Portage.

According to Indiana State Police, the driver of a red Jeep Compass overcorrected and lost control while attempting to change lanes near the 21.5 mile marker.

The Jeep drove onto the inside shoulder and rolled several times in the center median. The driver was thrown out of the Jeep as it rolled.

The Jeep came to a stop on its roof on top of the driver.

Several witnesses stopped to help and removed the Jeep from on top of the driver.

The drive was conscious and alert before Portage EMS arrived. While he was being transported to the hospital, life-saving measures were initiated. The driver was taken to Northlake Hospital in Gary, where he died.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office will identify the driver.

ISP said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. A front seat passenger was wearing a seatbelt and survived the accident.
