A Portage, Indiana man drowned after rescuing his girlfriend in Lake Michigan.

Officials say 28 year-old Donald Turner was swimming with her at Washington Park Beach Sunday afternoon when she began to struggle in the surf. Turner pulled her to safety before disappearing under the surface.

A swimmer discovered his body a short time later. He was pronounced dead at a Michigan City hospital.

Strong riptides continue on the lake, and created a high swim risk across Michiana beaches on Tuesday with unpredictable wave heights and dangerous conditions.
