$20K settlement paid to inmate kept too long at St. Joseph County Jail

(Tommie Lee/95.3 MNC)

A software problem is why two inmates at the St. Joseph County Jail were kept longer than their sentences required in 2019.

One man was in jail for two months longer than required, says the South Bend Tribune. He got a $20,000 settlement from the county’s Board of Commissioners in June.

Another man was kept for two days longer than he should have been. He has not received any money from the county.

An attorney for the St. Joseph County Police Department says the jail discovered the problem in Dec. 2019 and has switched to a different method of tracking inmate sentences.
