A 35-year-old Elkhart woman found guilty of murder in connection with the stabbing death of her husband has learned her fate.

Knesha Carruthers was sentenced to 55 years in prison.

She was found guilty, last month, of the murder of 33-year-old Jimmie Gillam back in 2019. Prosecutors say Carruthers stabbed Gillam in the chest after the two got into a fight and she locked him out of the house.

Gillam later died at an area hospital.

The Elkhart Truth reports Carruthers attorneys’ asked for a lighter sentence after arguing that Carruthers was suffering the effects of years of abuse when she acted and that she didn’t intend for Gilliam to die.
