Ex-SMC instructor enters plea tied to accusations of having improper relations with student

Just days before his trial was set to start, a former professor from Southwestern Michigan College has accepted a plea deal.

George Field, 60, was set for trial in Cass County, this week, on 17 criminal sexual conduct, insurance fraud and perjury charges.

Instead, Leader Publications reports he’s pleading no contest to attempted aggravated indecent exposure, perjury, unauthorized practice of a health profession, health care fraud and possession of marijuana.

The charges stem from accusations that Field was having improper relations with a student he was counseling.

The alleged incidents go back as far as 2015.

The Cass County Prosecutor says the victim is okay with the plea agreement, which calls for Field to be sentenced to a term of probation, a county jail sentence not to exceed one year and no requirement to register as a sex offender.

Field is set for sentencing in early September.
