Stueben County man reported missing found dead, person-of-interest in custody

A Steuben County man, who was missing for five days, was found dead in the garage of a house that caught fire.

Police say Daniel Sheets, 36, was reported missing on Friday, July 23. They say he was last seen at a house in Fremont Township that caught fire.

During the investigation, police found a dead body in the garage of the house.

An autopsy revealed the dead body was Sheets.

Police say the fire neither caused nor contributed to his death.

Steven Restemayer, 30, was found in a camper near the house. Restemayer was taken into custody on an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear on a charge of carrying a handgun without a license.

He is considered a person of interest in Sheets’ death.
