Former Benton Harbor Mayor Wilce Cooke dies

Former Benton Harbor Mayor Wilce Cooke has died.

The long-time fixture in the community served as mayor from 1981 to 1987, and again from 2004 to 2011. WSJM reports that Cooke also served as a nurse for more than 50 years at both Mercy Hospital and the Lakeland Health System. Cooke received an honorary doctorate at Andrews University in 2018.

He died Monday at the age of 83.
