Steel production down in Great Lakes area, but up nationwide

Great Lakes Steel production has fallen, but that isn’t the case nationwide.

Output from the Great Lakes region, including Indiana’s local production, fell by 10,000 tons in the last week of July. But US Steel Mills remained well over 80% capacity utilization according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.

The Northwest Indiana Times reports that our regional mills, most of which are along the South Shore of Lake Michigan, made 632,000 tons of steel that week.
