New Nature Preserve established in LaPorte County

(Kim Closson)

Indiana’s DNR has approved the designation of a new Nature Preserve in LaPorte County.

Say hello to Sebert Woods Nature Preserve.

The move will protect just over 39 acres of the Northwestern Morainal Natural Region, Chicago Lake Plain, and Valparaiso Moraine sections.

The state government approved the designation at the Natural Resources Commission meeting on Tuesday.

The area is a “remnant northern boreal flatwoods natural community,” a type of forest that is restricted to a narrow area just south of the Lake Michigan Dunes. It contains a number of plant species that are typically only found north of our region.
