The State of Michigan wants to test the country’s first wireless electric vehicle-charging road.

It’s part of Michigan’s goal to be carbon-neutral by 2050, according to Grist.org.

Last month Governor Whitmer said the state will build an EV-charging road on a one-mile stretch of pavement in the Metro Detroit area. The vehicle drives over the road and its battery is charged by pads or coils built under the surface of the street through the use of magnetism. It doesn’t fully charge the battery, but does boost its mileage before the next charge.

Where exactly the road will be installed and what it will cost are still unclear.
