Efforts to restore electricity continue following Monday night storms

Indiana Michigan Power is continuing restoration efforts in the Michiana area after a
severe storm system, Monday night, Oct. 11, unleashed heavy rain and strong wind gusts causing disruptions to electrical service.

As of 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, more than 9,300 customers were without power in Southwest Michigan and Northern Indiana – that’s down from 12,600 at
the peak of the storm.

More than 40% of customers without service are in the hard-hit South Bend, Ind., and
Buchanan, Mich., areas due to numerous downed trees, wires and poles, which could
require extensive repair work.

A contingent of 700 crews including line workers, hazard assessors and other assistance personnel were assigned to assist with damage and restoring power to customers. Some of the crew members were brought in from Muncie and Fort Wayne, as well as from AEP Ohio, which is I&M’s sister company.

Those crews are responding to more than 240 individual tickets reporting an outage or a hazard.

Across Michiana, wind gusts were recorded from 30 mph to 57 mph, Monday night, in South Bend.

Below are estimated restorations times based on location:

  • Elkhart, Ind., Benton Harbor, Mich., and Three Rivers, Mich.: expected 90% restored by 11 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 12.
  • Buchanan, Mich., and South Bend, Ind.: expected 90% restored by 11 p.m. tomorrow night, Wednesday, Oct. 13.

When crews restore customers in Elkhart and Benton Harbor they will move into Buchanan
and South Bend.
